This is probably the first Korean game I ever learned to play with my mom. You might’ve seen Gongi in Squid Game (Season 2, Part 1), but for me, it was a huge part of childhood. I like to think I was pretty good at it. I was the undefeated champion of my elementary and junior high days. If you want to challenge me, let’s run it.
As a creative, I’m always looking for new ways to bring playfulness into my work. I hadn’t seen anyone make a luxury version of Gongi before, so I decided to take it on. crafting each piece in gold and setting them with colorful gemstones I could find.
Back then, people played with small stones. These days, Gongi sets are made from plastic with tiny metal weights inside for balance, often in bright colors inspired by the traditional Korean hanbok. This piece is my modern take on that tradition. bridging nostalgia, culture, and craftsmanship into one playful design.
